AI-Driven Enzyme Redesign

Enzymes are biological wonders. These biological machines have evolved to catalyze a myriad of chemical reactions and are involved in almost every process of life.

They possess a huge potential for biotechnological and biomedical applications, but their intricate structure poses a significant challenge for their rational redesign.

My Momentum Project

AI-driven protein design is opening new frontiers in biotechnology, with major implications for medicine and beyond. Enzyme therapies, for instance, pose huge potential in tackling current healthcare challenges such as antibiotic resistance

This project leverages these advancements to develop a computational pipeline for engineering more efficient, scalable, and ethically sourced enzymes. By focusing on enzymes with antibacterial properties as a proof of concept, this work could transform not only therapeutic applications but also broader biotechnological industries.

Where Two Worlds Meet

This project entails the integration of two well-differentiated worlds I have been involved in: experimental molecular microbiology and computational biophysics. My career started in the world of microbiology, researching human pathogens in the context of virulence regulation and antibiotic resistance. After my PhD, I worked on membrane proteins and peptides, computationally characterizing their protein-lipid interactions.

But this project not only unifies my bench and computer experience, but also provides a unique opportunity to expand both worlds further by adding protein expression, structural redesign, and structural determination.
